Tom Doran

Biography

Tom Doran is a Welsh-born cinematographer from Splott, Cardiff, now based in Los Angeles and dividing his time between London and Wales. His films have screened nationally and internationally at festivals including Sundance, Hot Docs, Sheffield Doc/Fest, Aesthetica, and LSFF. The short documentary "Country Girl" won the Grierson Documentary Short 2020 and was nominated for Best International Short Documentary at Hot Docs. He received a nomination for his cinematography at the BSC Short Film Awards for "Motherland," the first time a documentary was nominated in this category. "Face Down in the Back of a Car" was nominated at BAFTA Cymru 2022, and "Mauled By a Dog" (Director Siôn Thomas) won Best Short Film at the BAFTA Cymru Awards 2025. Tom is collaborating with Siôn Thomas on his debut feature "Pig Eyes," currently in development with support from the BFI/Film Cymru and produced by Pulse Films. He recently filmed the feature "As I Lie Awake" in Chicago (Writer/Director Benjamin Tomson) and the three-part drama documentary "Can I Tell You a Secret?" for Netflix (Series Directors Liza Williams and Tash Gaunt, produced by Mindhouse). A graduate of the National Film and Television School, Tom has been working across documentary and drama. He finds image-making the most personal way to make sense of himself and the world, continuing to work in areas that allow for new insights into the human condition.
