Magda Kowalczyk
Biography
Magda Kowalczyk is a Director of Photography with over 15 years of experience in the film industry, the last ten based in the UK. She graduated from the Polish National Film School in Łódź as a Director of Photography in 2010, completed the Budapest Cinematography Masterclass in 2011, and studied documentary filmmaking at Wajda Studio in 2005. Her mother, film director, editor, and photographer Katarzyna Maciejko-Kowalczyk, was her greatest influence. Magda collaborated with director Andrea Arnold on her first feature documentary "Cow" (Producer Kat Mansoor), an intimate portrait of a dairy cow named Luma in rural England. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021, and Magda was nominated for Best Cinematography at BIFA in 2021. Other credits include "High & Low: John Galliano" and "Last Song from Kabul," both directed by Kevin Macdonald. She works regularly for the Tate and recently filmed with artist Małgorzata Mirga-Tas for director Scott Morris in Poland. She shot the feature film "Polyorama" in Reykjavik (Director Graeme Maley, produced by Arnar Benjamin Kristjánsson/Sagafilm). Most recently, Magda completed filming the feature documentary "Antiheroine" (Producers Dorothy Street Pictures, Julia Nottingham, Melanie Archer), which premiered at Sundance in 2026.
